What Is Sudden Oak Death
Sudden oak death is a plant disease caused by the invasive pathogen Phytophthora ramorum. It leads to the rapid decline and death of several types of oak and other tree species. The disease is characterized by symptoms such as bleeding cankers on the tree bark, wilted foliage, and dieback of shoots and branches. Over time, trees infected with P. ramorum become weakened and die.
The pathogen has had significant ecological and economic impacts, particularly in coastal California, where it has killed millions of trees, including tanoak, coast live oak, Shreve oak, and California black oak. The disease can also affect other plant species, making early detection and management crucial to prevent its spread.
